This is a summary of my understanding based on playing as well as various sources I've read and seen. Thought I'd map it out in a way that visualizes the relationships of each role to each other. I feel like this may help people understand their primary purpose in Valorant - and maybe even help you understand your own personality and why you decide to play certain heroes.
Here are some observations I find interesting:
-roles that are adjacent to each other have something in common in terms of either the value they provide or the way in which they provide it.
-roles diagonal to each other are completely different in terms of their purpose and method. For example, a controller is controler denies information in a preventative fashion while a duelist creates space proactively.
In both cases, it may explain why people have certain mains and seconds. Maybe you like the idea of information flow so you play initiators and controllers. Maybe you balance the way you engage with the game by playing roles that are diagonal to each other.
Hope this helps!
