How to make a successful 5v5 mode

^(about a 3 minute read)

Hi all,

I'm back again with another discussion topic.

Recently there's been a lot of chatter regarding Riot implementing a 5v5 "clash" mode. Not many details have been surfaced on the topic, so I'd like to share my input on how to make this mode truly innovative for the game's culture.

I am so terribly afraid that Riot might drop the ball here. I think there's lots of room for error, and I hope they get it right. Please do not make it just a 5-stack queue. Get deeper with it, make it fun, raise the stakes. Give ordinary players the feeling of being on a pro team.

I think that this mode, if done right, will be a huge success.

Team Profiles:

Ideally, I would like to be able to see a full page for my team, as well as other teams. I have created a stupid little mockup of what this may look like (I've never designed a UI so bare with me).

Frankly, I feel like this should already be a feature for big pro teams, but I would like to see it for our little measly casual teams as well.

- Team Rank: Your team starts out with a Team Rank which is the average rank of the roster. As you play clash matches with your team, each teammate receives RR as normal, subsequently changing the Team Rank as well. Recruiting a player will have an instant impact on your Team Rank, higher or lower depending on their personal rank/MMR. That way, you can't just recruit a Radiant and stomp in tourneys.

- Team Emblem: I know this is a shaky subject, but I would like for teams to be able to create and upload a team emblem. This could be a nightmare, I know. There needs to be some sort of moderation process for the emblems, to prevent the inevitable. I'm not sure how this could be implemented, but if done right, would be amazing for team customization. Additionally, each team can select a team color (possibly from a list of colors to ensure it does not clash with the UI style).

- Team Stats: As you can see, I've shown some pretty basic team stats, but I know Riot can do better. This is pretty self explanatory.

- Team Representation: It would be pretty cool if players had the option to show their team emblem on the match loading screen of regular games. However, this could get pretty crowded in the UI, so I can see why that's not a good idea. Regardless, I think a clan tag is a must (much like CoD). Teams can register a unique Clan Tag which cannot be taken by others.

- General Stuff: I would like to see some more interesting UI elements as well, perhaps a little "Last Match" element which shows the result of the team's most recent match. It would also be neat to see a "Tune In" button which would allow the player to join an ongoing match as an observer.

Match Logic:

I really, really don't want this to just be an ordinary five stack mode. That would be so boring, honestly. Here's my propositions:

- Casual Mode:

~~The obligatory scrimmage mode which lets you play "Unrated" with your team.~~ This is sort of trivial, since you can just stack with your team in Unrated, so it doesn't necessarily need to be implemented.

- Competitive Mode (Clash):

Competitive 5v5 in which you are playing for RR, and thus, Team RR.

- Tournaments:

This is what I want most. I think many people would like this as well. Teams will be able to register for tournaments, in which a set is played every Saturday for example. So a team can register for a tournament, and then play a best of 3 every weekened until the bracket is done and there is a winner. Winners will receive some sort of cosmetic item (probably a gun buddy). This is the best possible thing Riot could do for their competitive-casual audience. That is, the players who put hours into the game, but aren't streamers/pro players.

- Five-Stacks Only:

There's no reason to even allow filling of teams. That's what the regular queue is for. If you can't get 5 people on the game, then forget it, just play in normal comp queue.

Just some general stuff:

Coach & Sub Slots:

Have team slots reserved for coaches/subs. We aren't actual pro players, so we may need the weekend off for personal reasons. This shouldn't disqualify you from the tournament, so we need sub slots.

Team Leaderboard:

A place to show the top 500 teams, for example. Pretty self explanatory

Team Admin Panel:

Sort of oddly specific, but there should be a place on the Valorant website to simply manage your team. Change emblem, team colors, recruit, kick, etc. (I'm a software engineer proficient in Electron btw ;).

Team Bulletin Board:

The ability for team owners to send messages to their players. They get a notification through the Riot app or associated email. 12hr cooldown on this. (stolen from clash of clans)

That's all I can think of right now. What do you guys think?
