How to peak/push an angle that is being pre-aimed?

I know this is something that you would learn by just playing, but I want to ask for tips on how to do this.

I'm still fairly new to the game and just want some opinions on what range to use the classic pistol's 'shotgun' feature. I only find it effective at extremely close range, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.
