Right now agent XP rewards stop at LVL10 with a weapon skin which is a fun little grind if you are an occasionnal player. However when you start playing a bit more regularly this goal is achieved very fast and about everyone can unlock a bunch of agent weapons in a reasonable time.
Inspecting an ability would be a fun addition as an extra level for players to show off on their favorite agent. Here are some cool examples we could have :
-
Phenix playing with a fireball (molly) making it like a small tornado or different shapes
-
Cypher fiddling with a tripwire/cage token, making it flow between his fingers
-
Chamber handing his gold card to someone else or reading it
-
Raze petting her boom bot
-
Kay/o inspecting his knife
-
Viper inspecting a snakebite like a test tube
-
Neon doing an "is for me?" pose with her fingers and have little sparks in between ( she cant hold an ability in her hands so it has to be something a bit different)
-
Brimstone playing a candycrush-like on his tablet (he kinda gives me boomer vibes)
Though there are some problems :
- It would be kinda hard to implement/underwhelming on characters that do not have cool abilities to show like Fade or Sage. Orb-looking abilities can still be turned into cool things but need a bit of a stretch.
- It would also be kinda rare to show it because you would need to have the utility up to inspect it. A Raze will always use her boom bot at the beginning of rounds just like Cypher and his tripwires. So at the end of the round when your mates are spectating you after your amazing clutch you couldn't inspect your ability because you aleady used it. So you should rather be able to inspect your free ability which restrains again the possibilities.
- If we make it so that someone can inspect an ability that is not available/a taunt that does not rely on holding a weapon/ability, we run into a case where the player is not holding a weapon or an ability in hand. That should not be possible because at every point of the game you are supppsed to be able to fight and not holding anything in hand, not even knife would be trolling
- It would deminish the interest for inspecting weapons going against the business model
So there are obvious problems but I kinda feel the appeal for agent XP being pushed to LVL15 for a special reward. The idea of having a special inspect ability/"taunt" to show off your experience and make your agent look a bit more "alive" when mates are spectating feels quite cool imo.
A lot of games (including LoL) try to reward players dedicated to a character with statistics or some cosmetics but the main point for players is to incarnate their favorite character. Allowing dedicated players to show off a "hidden feature" of their character to look a bit different than a regular player on their character would feel like best reward. It's more about the style than the possession.
