is it correct to play to survive over winning?

So I have a friend who I'm duo with almost all the time, and we are both eager to win and learn from our mistakes. But recently he has been in the mindset of "as long as I don't die we win the game" which I keep telling him that I think our deaths shouldn't be priority, but winning should.

Let's say we played a gun game and its 2vs2, we got don't have spike even if we are attacking and we don't know enemy positions. In this situation he would always save his gun for the next round while I want to try and win the round, as I care little of what weapon Im gonna use for next round and want to win the round. This often leads me dying alone while he is hiding in a corner saving his gun. Which of us were right in this situation?

I also have several games where I goes in with the team and he goes lurking to pick off rotating players, I and the team lit the enemy up to 140 in 4 players and killing 1 of them, while dying. My friend in this situation priority his survival until next round and doesn't care that all he requires is 1 bullet to kill someone. I would have hunted the 4 remaining players, but he would prioties to keep a specter to save for the next round. Which one of us were right in this situation?

Now I love my friend and we have a great time playing with each other, but this argument is getting tiredome so I came here to reddit and will share this post with my friend to see the results.

Edit: If my friend would make a comment here he would be downvoted to hell and back 😆. He said you are all wrong, and writing this just cause you are gold and lower. Doe it made him in bad mood to have wrong and didn't wanna play today 😞
