Again, making a basic strategy guide, because I'm frustrated with low gold Rated queue. As usual, feel free to correct me.
The Roles:
- Counteraggressor/Flank (Frontline)
This position is geared towards characters that are suited better to an agressive playstyle, such as some Duelists, and most Initiators. You take a forward position, such as on Bind for example U-Hall an A site, or garden on B, Ramps or Garage or mid on Split, etc. You catch the enemy team early in their push and sacrifice yourself to stall for your team to rotate. Make sure you call out to your team when you engage. Your priority isn't getting kills, but surviving. You try to catch the enemy entryfragger out. If the enemy team is going to the other side, you try to flank them or, if they try to rotate, you take an agressive position along the flank and stall, giving your team intel and time to rotate. In some rare cases, your OPer will want to play this position.
- Backline
The backlined is typically manned by Controllers and Initiators. It commonly includes your OPer, who you should agree on to avoid misbuys. You hold angles from the back of site and play as slow as you can. Pay attention to the minimap and your team's calls, to rotate as quickly as you can. when you rotate, rotate together and only leave your site's counteragressor to push alone and get intel. Different units have different styles: Initiators can use their utility to help out their counteragressor with intel and flashes, while Controllers can smoke agressively. Remember to SMOKE AGRESSIVELY. Don't cut off your OPer's line of sight. Don't smoke your Counteragressor into a corner. If you don't know what to smoke, reconsider your character choice or watch a tutorial.
-Midline
Comprised of Sentinels and Controllers, the Midline takes agressive positions similar to the Frontline, however it will prioritize its own survival over stalling and rotate defensively. Sentinels play here, because they have to set up their defense during the buy phase, controllers, because their smokes make it ambiguous for the enemy team, and prevent them from reading their positioning.
An example: a typical Ascent defense setup.
Jett runs straight towards Cat, in order to hold an angle across the map. Brimstone positions himself in the entry between A main and A site, and prepares to smoke himself and Top mid to cover Jett, while Sova, with the OP stands on top of A site. Sage runs to mid to hold market and potentially wall, while Phoenix stands on B main with a Bucky.
The midline here is comprised of Brimstone and Sage, who can rotate defensively rather than offensively flank, but will take some time to do so. Sova, this round's OPer, is the Backline, most easily able to rotate defensively, and the first to make it to B CT, if Phoenix calls it and stalls, using Sages crossfire from Market. The frontline is played by Jett and Phoenix, who can rotate across mid to flank, and take offensive positions that they can't afford to leave and concede defensively. They have to play agressively, because only that way can they know that their position won't be taken by the enemy team while they are gone.
