EDIT:: Thanks to the help of some Mexican readers, it actually turns out that Catrina is the representation of death in Mexican culture, often portrayed by a skeleton lady in a colourful dress with floral details (cred to this description to u/quelilan !! and also cred to u/SevenRedKing for also commenting about Catrina). Unfortunately I didn't know about that aspect of Mexican culture, so this theory is pretty much debunked!! HOWEVER!!! Don't be afraid to take this as a reminder to look into other cultures - Dia de los Muertos is an upcoming event (November 2nd) and is a large celebration in Mexico. I highly encourage you look into it as it's always interesting to see what other cultures around the world do and celebrate. Dia de los Muertos is one of many events that are completely new to Western ideas of holidays and there's so much cultural meaning and importance behind the events that they hold, it's great to look into these things!! While it's a bummer that we didn't get more info on Reyna's lore, it's also great to learn more about Mexican culture and this is just the beginning of things you can discover! :)
So, as most of us lore hunters know, Reyna's sister was killed. However, what we're never told is her name. Reyna sometimes refers to her sister in her dialogue - she will sometimes say 'For you, hermanita'. Recently, VALORANT released a new bundle - it's named 'Nunca Olvidados', translating to 'Never Forgotten'. Similarly, the designs relate to 'Dia de los Muertos'. Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition in which Mexicans partake in festivities to remember those who have passed on - while it's named 'Day of the Dead', it's more like a celebration of life. It's NOT to be confused with Halloween, as it's a cultural event belonging to Mexico that has completely different meanings behind it!! Some activities include face painting, where people will paint their faces to look like skulls decorated with floral designs - these are very distinct designs which you'll be able to recognise. (Just search 'Dia de los Muertos' on images and you'll probably be able to find some of these designs). As I was saying, these designs are prominent on the weapon skins in the 'Nunca Olvidados' bundle - it would make sense for the bundle to be related to Dia de los Muertos considering it's an upcoming event. In Reyna's card, her face even has the traditional skull face paint. However, what stood out to me was the name of the new Melee weapon - 'Catrina'. My theory is that Catrina is the name of Reyna's late sister. The reasons for this are:
- The bundle is Dia de los Muertos themed
- We all know that Reyna has lost her younger sister
- Dia de los Muertos is a celebration to commemorate the dead - it would make sense for the Catrina weapon to be named after Reyna's sister.
However, it could also be about Reyna's mother/female family figure - The gun skins feature a woman on them - she resembles Reyna due to the hair, however she looks much older. Could this be another family member to Reyna?
This is just a theory of mine, but I hope it makes sense to some of you! If anyone else has anything to add or even an alternate viewpoint please do comment! Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
