Viper smoke for molly lineups?

I was playing unrated yesterday and someone told me I didnt have to smoke the bomb off with vipers smoke to do molly lineups. is this true? i was under the impression it did more damage this way.

Why do people not play smokers as often as other roles? (excluding Duelist).

I feel like 8/10 times I play if I dont pick a smoker we don't have one. Smokers are really fun and useful why do people avoid it like it's the worse impactless role?
