It seems like there’s been a recent trend to surrender an Unrated around round five if you’ve been losing... but this didn’t happen nearly as often before.
Is there some change I’m missing, or some benefit to this?

Pro Tip for Mental Health: Mute Toxic Players instantly. Even tell them if you feel like it.
Dont even bother replying to toxic players, just mute them. It might be an eye opener for them if you write in the chat "xyz muted".
