I had finished a few comp games and wanted to cool off before work, so I queued up with the randoms in my previous comp game as they were quite nice and asked if they’d like to run an unrated for fun.
We get in and being an unrated, I play pretty fast and loose and admittedly get away with a lot more than I reasonably should. About 8-9 rounds in the enemy team asks what my rank is—Bronze 1. I’m flooded with “that’s cap” and “suuuuure” messages from two people on the enemy team immediately and they called me a smurf. They were pretty toxic in a variety of ways too during chat and it was just…weird? They got so mad in an unrated. Even if I was actually a smurf, I feel like you can just go next…
According to one of my team members they found out the enemy team’s top frag was Gold 1, and upon checking tracker after the match, their top frag was projecting pretty hard as they regularly 5-stack comp with plat 2-3 players and were just hurt the Bronze 1 was doing better than them. Still very weird. Why are people so quick to blame smurfs? Like I understand smurfing absolutely sucks, but this is an unrated match and I was just trying to enjoy myself before work.
I’ve even experienced it on my end where I’d have teammates cry smurf because they push out with no info into mid and get picked off by someone five rounds in a row. Are we not accountable for our own mistakes/misplays anymore? It’s just someone else’s fault for maybe just being a bit better than us? I think it’s pretty obvious when someone IS smurfing but I’m pretty jaded to everyone just calling the enemy top frag a smurf
