How to defend effectively? (See description)

I don't play a lot of Competitive but from the 7 games I've played this Act, I can see that I'm clearly losing lots of defensive rounds:

On attack, I try to get the spike down (hence the 7.00 Plants / Match stat and I play for trades. I use smokes and walls to get the spike down etc. On defence though, my teams would just get ripped apart.

(My Unrated stats are a lot more 50/50, so maybe I'm just overthinking it)

Any tips for doing better defensively?

Op cycling noise sometimes seems way closer than it is..

It's super random when it happens and I don't know what causes it or what specific set of circumstances there are... which character is using it... It's gotten me killed more than once because I'll look in the direction that the cycling cam...
