Why is eco so important?

Valorant is my first fps and I'm a bit curious and confused. If you have enough money to buy the guns you want why does it matter? Why's there an eco score?

I placed gold, but never won a game in it. Do I get a gold buddy?

Does this mean at the end of the season I will only get a silver buddy as I was never able to win in gold?
